Your bags are packed and you are ready to go. Your vacation has finally arrived! It’s time for some good, old-fashioned rest and relaxation. But, what happens if something goes wrong? What if you get sick or injured? Oh…you have health insurance – right? Great! That should cover you. But, wait a minute…your health insurance may not cover you! Let’s look a little further into what you need to make sure you are covered in the event of an emergency on your next excursion.
Summer Vacation: Where Are You Headed?
So, what’s it going to be…the beach or the mountains? Are you headed to Europe or maybe Mexico? It all sounds like so much fun. But, did you know that your medical insurance that you rely on stateside won’t cover international travel? That’s right. And, as if that fact wasn’t concerning enough to your budget, please keep in mind that $100,000 won’t even cover getting you home if you are sick or injured and need special transport back to the states from some distant regions. Hold onto your wallets…this is going to be a bumpy ride.
Approximately 95% of our British traveling friends take out travel insurance policies. Their healthcare system is very different from ours in the US, so they don’t have the same attitude toward healthcare. Americans, on the other hand, tend to average around 30-40% feeling travel insurance is an important investment.
The trend has shifted somewhat with world events making the globe seem so much smaller recently. The US Travel Insurance Association released an article stating that more Americans are concerned about traveling but will probably not change their travel plans. You can read the entire report here.
While many people are becoming more aware of cautions to be aware of when they travel, many say they will continue to travel. That’s great! Going out and experiencing all this great world has to offer is wonderful. Just please go prepared. Many of those same folks seem to still be confused on what is covered by travel insurance and if they are covered by certain organizations (for example: a cruise line or credit card company). For some questions to ask yourself when choosing travel insurance coverage, the US Travel Insurance Association has some great information on their FAQ page.
“There’s No Place Like Home”
So, what should you do if you are enjoying your vacation and you or a family member becomes sick or injured? First, seek medical attention immediately. But, please realize that the United States has one of the premier healthcare systems in the world. For example, if you have a heart attack in the US, you may be put into a catheterization lab within hours of your emergent episode. That is a typical standard of care here. Abroad, you may simply be given medicine. So, let’s get you or your family member home as soon as possible.
Next, we hope we have convinced you to consider purchasing travel medical insurance. Once you or your family member is stabilized, your case manager will be stopping by to review your options. (Or you may ask for help in this matter so that hospital staff can get you in touch with your case manager or appropriate hospital staff). Please give them your insurance policy and ask them to give us a call immediately at (011)888-632-5560 for a full insurance policy evaluation.
We will then help your case manager by beginning the process of entering all of the necessary insurance information so that we can get you or your family member home as quickly as possible on our state-of-the-art jet engine air ambulance (an ER at over 40,000 feet).
