Not only is February the month of love for many but it is also Heart Health Awareness month. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Yes it is right up there with cancer. However, don’t let that discourage you because heart disease can often be prevented by choosing a healthy lifestyle. A few things you can do to better your chances against heart disease is to know your family’s health history, eat healthier, incorporate exercise in your life, and make sure to get the right amount of sleep. One of the most important things you can do is educate yourself about your family’s health history. Unfortunately no matter how healthy you are and how young you are, if heart disease runs in your family you are at a far greater risk. Some other actions you can take to reduce your risk of heart disease are lowering you blood pressure and cholesterol. A great way to live a healthy lifestyle is to have company while doing it. Recruit some family and friends to accompany you on your health quest. Heart attacks have several major warning signs and symptoms. It would be wise to be aware of these warning signs so here they are. Be alert if you are suffering from chest pain or discomfort, upper body pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper stomach. Also, shortness of breath and nausea, lightheadedness, or cold sweats are possible symptoms of a heart attack. Truly, the best defense is to just educate yourself in general. Be safe out there and enjoy your life!
