So, you’re having a wonderful time in Mexico and BOOM! you are injured and need to get home. What are you going to do? You booked your entire Mexican vacation online through Expedia, so why not just do the same to get home – right? Not so fast. Air ambulances aren’t like regular commercial flights. And, not all air ambulances are the same. Do your research (and this should not be a price-driven decision). Sure, you got a great deal on that vacation, but you don’t want to go in search of deals in this situation. Here’s why: You need to find out the following:
- What type of safety measures are in place?
- What type of aircraft? (Remember a jet versus prop plane makes a difference. Please see our blog article explaining the difference).
- What is the safety record of the aircraft?
- Do you use dual or single pilots? (We use dual pilots for safety).
- What is the quality of care?
- What is the tenure of the medical staff?
- Will everything that my patient or loved one need be fully stocked on board?
This is too important to leave to chance. Think about safety, quality of care, and the staff. Only then should you make an informed decision.
When Should You Call Aero Jet Medical?
As soon as the patient is admitted and the case manager says, “Uh oh, they aren’t from around here. They are going to need to get home and they might need air transport specialists.” Don’t wait! The case manager should go ahead and give us a call. We can go ahead and begin the process of working with insurance to get the preauthorization started.
And we here at Aero Jet Medical are going to make it extremely easy on the case manager. The case manager stays busy and needs to be at the patient’s bedside (not shuffling paper). So once we have the basic information, we have corporate specific software that is HIPAA-compliant on a secure network that is going to populate the fields. We aren’t going to ask for the information over and over.
